TRUTUBE: Eddy Current Magnetic Braking Demonstration
The technology behind Head Rush Tech devices is pretty cool, but it’s hard to clearly explain. There are college lectures that cover how our technology works, so it’s not a simple 1-minute explanation. The best way to get an idea of how our technology works is to see a demonstration of it. Head Rush created the TRUTUBE as a way to show the science in action.
CAUTION: The magnet that comes with the TRUTUBE is extremely powerful. To prevent injury, use extra care when the magnet is around any metal objects or especially around other magnets.
This demonstration will show the core science behind the braking technology used in Head Rush devices - called eddy current magnetic braking. Let’s start with this brass slug and this aluminum tube.
You can see that the brass slug falls through the tube as expected.
This is a rare earth magnet made of neodymium [neo-dim-ee-um], which means it’s a permanent magnet and is extremely strong. This magnet is the same size and weight as the brass slug.
Aluminum is not magnetic, so the magnet is not attracted to the aluminum tube, but when you add motion to the equation eddy currents are created. These eddy currents oppose the magnetic field of the falling magnet and cause the braking effect.
This eddy current magnetic braking is what provides the braking force in all Head Rush Technologies devices.
